Alan's 2024 10km swim for MS

By Alan FitzGerald Join Me

Please help me to be Limitless For MS!

My story.

Just over 25 years ago, I woke up, and something weird happened to me - my eyes weren't working properly, and parts of my face, my legs and my hands were numb. I went to a local doctor whose instructions of 'Get to a hospital NOW!' kinda freaked me out. A week later, I was discharged with a new diagnosis of MS - how did this happen?

Well, that's the big question that is being worked on - why does it happen...?

There have been some recent advances that are fantastic, but ongoing research and care are always required.

I am an absolute rarity - apart from minimal effects, I have dodged a bullet - but many won't.

I am also a keen swimmer and will be doing a 10km swim in March - so why not see if I can raise some funds to help out?

Any amount is welcome, and thanks for your support!

I've got it; it doesn't have me!

Al

MS is the most common disease of the central nervous system - currently, there is no cure.

It's quite staggering to think that multiple sclerosis affects more young people than any other neurological condition, with the average age of diagnosis just 30 years old. Every case of multiple sclerosis is unique - the symptoms, severity and progress of the disease are different for everyone.

You can ensure Aussies living with multiple sclerosis can break down barriers, achieve goals and live well by making a secure online donation.

Thank you for your support.

10km done and dusted!!!!

Monday 18th Mar
What perfect conditions for a swim.Β  Alas my watch died 300 or so metres from home, but you'll get the drift from the video below.
I managed to slice about 30 minutes off my previous best for the distance, but I'll primarily put that down to the conditions.

Thanks to all who supported me!

Alan

Event cancelled, still swam, a new one entered

Monday 4th Mar

Due to high winds, officials cancelled the 10km swim event yesterday at Williamstown for swimmer safety reasons. Several of us still managed to do 7.5kms before it did get too dodgy as the winds were blowing at upwards of 35+kmh with waves of 1m+ making it progressively harder.

I am determined to reward all of those who have kindly donated to my efforts and so have entered ANOTHER 10km event on the 16th March.

Our swim can be seen via this link:

Relive 'Hard Willy'

Last hit out before the big day

Monday 26th Feb
What a day - a last largish swim before next week in stunning flat water.Β  Alas the long range forecast for next week is far from the same - hopefully the weather Gods will shine upon us.

Here is an excellent video of yesterday's swim:Β Relive 'Crystals to Timeball'Β

Training - lots and lots

Friday 16th Feb
My watch tells me that since starting my training for this event, I have swum just under 100 kilometres.Β Β
With just over two weeks to go, I'll add another 25 to 30kms to that.Β  This explains why I sleep so well...

It took a lost weekend...

Tuesday 13th Feb
Another big weekend (for me at least) of swimming with about 12 or so km notched up over 2 days.Β  I have refined my sustenance and hydration needs, so for the 1st time in A VERY LONG TIME - I had no cramps in my calves ...
Here are some groovy videos

Shirt ripping tales...

Wednesday 7th Feb
Sooooo.Β  An upside of doing so much swimming is that it has changed my body shape - my shoulders are much broader than before.

The downside is that it resulted in me ripping a shirt - a nice one too - just by bending to pick something out of a drawer...

About 13kms of weekend swimming

Monday 5th Feb
OK - so I was a little tired on Sunday arvo...Β  On Saturday, a bunch of us did around 5.5km From Elwood to St Kilda marina and back, and yesterday, one of my swim buddies (Nami) & I did just over 7kms.Β Β
Via funky videos, you can check out the swims below:

Williamstown swim

Friday 26th Jan
5km swim today - quite bumpy with winds gusting to 20knots (about 40kmnh) making for a hard final leg back.Β Β

Check it out with this groovy graphicΒ

The Age - that's me on the left

Thursday 25th Jan
The Age did a report about the quality of the water in Port Phillip Bay

Despite the murky water...

Monday 15th Jan
OK - Port Phillip Bay is pretty disgusting at the moment from upstream flood waters.
3 of us did a 5.5km or so in a stiff southerly which took MUCH TOO long for it to be enjoyable.Β  Such was the water quality, we came out looking like the little critter above...

7.5Km swim Sunday 7th January

Wednesday 10th Jan
Wow - what a start to the year: following a bout of COVID and a bad chest infection, I used this 10km event as a 'trial run' doing 7.5km.Β  Whilst I was a bit slower than anticipated, it was good and with nearly 2months left of training, good to know I am on track!Β  Here's a groovy video of the event.
